Media center to work with other departments to host events

The media center is in the process of planning various educational events with other academic departments, namely the English and the social studies departments.

“Nothing’s locked in yet,” Bonnie Grimble, media specialist department chair, said. “We are still in the planning stages, but we’re planning to work with displays and special events.”

The special events will be in line with last year’s successful Vietnam Day event, in which the media center department worked together with the social studies department to educate students about the era of America’s involvement in Vietnam. The event involved music, guest speakers and displays.

“(Vietnam Day) was very worthwhile for the students, which is what we always hope to achieve,” media specialist John Shearin said.

The media center hosts a number of other events a year, such as the Teen Read Week and Freedom to Read Week (Banned Book Week). According to Shearin, the media center department is also discussing events regarding the civil rights movement, the year of the solar system and the special tenth anniversary of Sept. 11.

Shearin said that he feels excited about the new school year. “I always have a sense of excitement at the beginning of the school year,” Shearin said. “I am always proud of the media center here (at Carmel High School), and I think we’re doing a good job.”

Grimble said that she agrees. “I think every year’s starting off bigger and better,” Grimble said. “The majority of the staff is anxious to start working with the curriculum and the kids. With labs, databases and books, we’re starting off with a full load every day.”
