The season is over for the men’s varsity soccer team. The Hounds endured a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Cathedral in the Regional Semifinal on Oct. 11. Two minutes into the first half, the team quickly fell behind as a Cathedral forward made a run toward the far post and headed in a cross past Carmel goalkeeper Ryan Clark. For the remaining 78 minutes, however, the Hounds were in complete control. Time after time again, the team were given opportunities to score but could not get the ball past Cathedral’s goalkeeper.

“It was frustrating,” Head Coach Shane Schmidt said. “We dominated every facet of the game except the final score. We hit the crossbar 3 times, the post once and the goalkeeper made a couple really nice saves.”

For David Capone, team captain and senior, the loss did not make sense.

“It just stinks that our season had to end this way,” Capone said. “We knew we were the better team and we dominated the entire game. For me, I just felt pain from losing such a close game that we dominated. I really learned how cruel the sport of soccer can be.”

Although the team fell short of its ultimate goal of winning a State Championship, Schmidt was content with the season.

“It was a fantastic season,” Schmidt said. “You just cannot put into words how extremely proud I am of everyone on our team. Their positive attitudes, camaraderie, hard work and love of the game sure did make the season beyond enjoyable. This group of guys will forever have a special place in my heart. I love them and what they did and mean to our soccer program as a whole.”

The Hounds ended the season with a final record of 14-4-1. The team scored 54 goals and conceded only 10.
