The first convocation of the semester is scheduled to take place on March 28 during SRT. This is changed from the originally scheduled date of March 14.  According to Jim Inskeep, director of athletics and activities, who is in charge of the programming for the ceremony, the all-school meeting will recognize any state championship winners in winter varsity sports as well as exemplary accomplishments in academics.

As of now, the school plans to honor the women’s swimming and diving team and the National Merit Finalists, with additional honorees pending. Like last year, the mid-March convocation will also recognize the participants of this year’s Dance Marathon, in which over $290,000 were raised in support of Riley Children’s Hospital. In addition, teams like the Color Guard may be honored depending on their performances at respective national competitions.

“I think it’s part of our school’s culture to recognize excellence in front of their peers,” Inskeep said. “When we stop doing that, it sends the message that we’re too big to pay attention to these great achievements.”

Principal John Williams said that a priority for the administration will be expediting the process of seating students and getting the convocation under way.

“We get down at 10:05 or so and our convos are usually quick,” he said. “We try to finish in 20 minutes or less.”

According to Williams, the school also plans to host a second annual performing arts convocation in mid-April to honor the achievements and talents of top choirs, bands and orchestras here. By Victor Xu.
