According to Jack Beery, Carmel Dads Club president, the Dads Club has opened registration for the upcoming spring season, which will begin in April. The spring season, Beery said, offers football, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf, rugby and lacrosse. Students who are interested in joining can either register on the Dads Club website or fill out a form at the office, which is located at 5459 E. Main St.

In preparation for the upcoming season, Beery said the Dads Club is looking for volunteers who are willing to serve as coaches or commissioners. Volunteers, according to Beery, must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check. Those who are interested in volunteering can also sign up online.

“We’re always looking for good coaches and commissioners,” Beery said. “To be a commissioner, you’ve just got to be an organized person who has good administrative skills and could be a good leader for our program. For coaches, we’re looking for people who can work well with the kids and make sure they have fun, stay safe and work together as a team.”

Junior Sharmistha Chakrabarti has played soccer at the Dads Club since she was three years old and said she has signed up for the upcoming spring season. Chakrabarti said she agrees good coaches are necessary for the success of a team.

“A coach has to be someone who knows the game well enough to give their athletes pointers and suggestions on how to do better,” Chakrabarti said. “Having a coach who doesn’t understand the game is just pointless.”

Beery said Carmel Dads Club staff members value and rely on the volunteers who are essential in keeping their programs running.

“Whatever you can get involved with, we really do appreciate it,” Beery said. “The Dads Club is a volunteer-based organization. We need volunteers to function, so whenever people come out and get involved, it really helps out. These volunteers can really make an impact in these kids’ lives and it’s really rewarding for both the volunteer and the athletes. It’s unbelievable. Just getting out and being part of yours or other kids’ lives is really important.”
