With the beginning of fall sports, the Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC) is in the process of developing methods to give students more incentive to attend school sporting events.

Mary Caltrider, student body president and PAC member, said, “This goal is specifically working through the principals advisory council. We are in the works of creating a ‘fan of the week’ raffle that can be achieved by attending sporting events. I think this will help get school spirit for all sports.”

According to Principal John Williams, the methods were proposed because attendance at sporting events has been low.

“We had a lot of kids at the football game, but that’s really more of a social thing,” Williams said. “But I know our boys’ tennis team is ranked no. 1; they played North Central who’s ranked no. 2 at our place on Thursday. I went out to it, and North Central probably had a hundred kids there, and we may have had 5 or 6. It’s definitely a real issue.”

Attending school sporting events is important because it provides support for the athletes, Williams said.

“Those kids work hard. Whether it’s tennis or volleyball or wrestling or cross-country or whatever, in some sports, you’re just more fan-friendly than other sports,” Williams said. “I think (school spirit’s) important because those kids work really hard, and they represent out school really well, and it would be really nice for a group of kids to go and support them.”
