Science department to meet Dec. 13, integrate new devices into classes

The science department will meet Dec. 13 after school, according to department chairperson Jennifer Marlow. Marlow said the meeting will focus on the new devices the school has ordered. The three different types of devices are iPads, Chromebooks and laptop convertibles, and each department will house a different number of carts with the new technology. According to Marlow, the science department will have two carts with 15 devices each for each of the three types.

“A lot of our focus next month will be on how to use those devices effectively in the classroom and helping students to use those devices,” Marlow said. “Different departments are housing different numbers of carts in their department, but any teachers can use any of the carts throughout the building. They just check them out almost like they’re checking out a computer lab.”

Registration for the Chemistry Olympiad is still open, and students can register through chemistry teacher Virginia Kundrat. Biology Olympiad and Physics Olympiad registrations will also open soon. Nathan Fei, Physics Club president and senior, said he plans to take the Physics Olympiad exam and is already preparing during Physics Club meetings. He said even students who are not currently in a physics course should still sign up for the competition and participate in the club.

“What I like most about Physics Club is mainly the community,” Fei said. “I’d say that it’s a pretty good investment of your time because if you’re confused about certain problems and the solutions don’t explain it well enough for you, it’s always good to have human resources available.”
