Women’s golf looks toward tourney

By: Daniyal Habib <[email protected]>

As the MIC Championship and Sectional tournaments approach, Milena Savich, team captain and senior, said she is ready to add one more title to the current streak of 10 MIC Championships in a row for the women’s golf team.

“I would like to defend my win last year with a win this year,” she said. “We all are working very hard and hoping to start a string of wins, with the MIC Conference Championship being the first,” On Saturday, Carmel will face Ben Davis, Lawrence North, Terre Haute South, Terre Haute North, Warren Central, North Central and Center Grove in the MIC Championship.

In the Sectional, which begins Saturday, Sept. 15, Carmel will compete in the Crawfordsville group, along with Clinton Prairie, Crawfordsville, Frankfort, Guerin Catholic, Lebanon, North Montgomery, Southmont, Western Boone, Westfield and Zionsville. Should Carmel advance to the Regional, it will face off against the winners from the Western and Lafayette Jefferson groups, the other two advancing teams from the Crawfordsville group, and one more unannounced group.

A win at the MIC Championship could continue a solid season so far for the women’s golf team. As of Aug. 28, Carmel achieved a ranking of 13 in the state. The team finished in the top half of every tournament so far this season except one, achieving second in three of the first four.

“We started out very hot and played our best golf for about a week and a half-two weeks. We (as a team) broke the school record at our second invitational. Since then, we’ve played okay but there’s always room for improvement and we look forward to the next few weeks with conference and Sectionals coming up shortly.”

Individually, Savich, has also had some early success this season. At the Hamilton Southeastern Invitational, Savich broke her own record from last year for a one round score by shooting a five-under par 65. That same day, the team beat the school record for a team score. Over the summer, Savich moved from 169th in the country to 50th.

Even though the prospects of a state title look good, Savich said she likes to keep a cool head about it. “I don’t want to talk about winning State, especially since we haven’t played Sectionals yet. I would love to win and I’m going to do everything I possibly can to do it, but I like to let my play do the talking for me.”
