Volleyball team bonds

By: Jessee Jordan <[email protected]>

With young and new players on the women’s varsity squad, members of this year’s volleyball team said that there are looking forward to a successful season with many more to come.

One of the new varsity players is senior Brooke Foyer. Foyer, who came from Heritage Christian, said that she likes playing here for the most part. “I like this team better because it has more girls and is a step up from Heritage,” she said. “Heritage was only a 2A school and Carmel is not. Even though the team is bigger, it’s still like the team is one big family; they just took me right in.”

Another newer player is Maggie Harbison, middle hitter and sophomore. This year marks Harbison’s second on varsity.

“It is a lot of fun being on varsity, but since I am younger than most of the girls, and there are only two other sophomores on varsity, we get most of the ‘grunt’ work,” she said.

Harbison said that for the most part the team is the same as last year. “Only difference is the new girls,” she said.

Harbison’s sister, senior Sarah Harbison, is also the team captain. Maggie said, “We get along pretty well for the most part, but like all siblings we do have our moments when we get angry with each other.”

The team members said the team has been doing well for the most part but they still want to try to get better.

“We’ve been practicing since the beginning of the summer,” Foyer said, “but we all know that we can be better than we are right now. We just have to try harder.”

Head Coach Bill Bastin was unavailable for comment.

The volleyball team will play tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in the Carmel Invitational at the Eric Clark Activities Center. Next week’s matches will be on Tuesday at Lawrence North and Sept. 15 at Warren Central for its invitational.
