Economics team takes first and second place, advances to regional competition

The Economics Competition Team took first and second place in both the AP and college-prep divisions in the state competition on April 14.

The first place winners go to the regional competition in Baltimore on April 27, according to Michelle Foutz, sponsor of the team. The regional competition will take place in the Federal Reserve Bank. The members of the team finishing first in the AP division are David Yang, Vikas Vavilala, Nick Cooper and Vince Reuter. Members of the advancing college-prep division team are Michael Greenberg, Karen Rans, Jenn Siriwardane and Curt Ginder.

James Sun, member of one of the AP division teams and senior, said, “I placed second to the other AP division Carmel team on the fourteenth, but we still had one of the highest scores.”

Although the teams that won second place scored close behind the first place winners, only the first place winners will advance.

“The kids did a great job,” Foutz said. “Their scores were significantly higher than any of the teams at the state competition. Unfortunately, only one team of four students can attend the regional competition.”

According to Foutz, the team will go to Nationals in New York sometime in May if it wins first place in the regional competition.
