Due to a newly reorganized room, the Carmel Connects club has increased its output of computers. The club meets every Monday immediately after school in Room F104.
According to co-president and senior Josh Bloxsome, club members recently rearranged the room in order to more efficiently work on fixing donated computers. “The last thing we did (as a club) was reorganize the room and change the way we repurpose,” Bloxsome said.
Club members acquire computers from Net Literacy, a non-profit organization seeking to provide computers to needy families in Indiana, Illinois and Wyoming. Students then repair the computers by clearing off old data and installing new hardware, software and operating systems.
This semester, club sponsor Margaret Winans worked with her IT Essentials students in order to restore more computers. According to Winans, these students now repair computers during class as a part of the curriculum for the class. “Students enjoy (repurposing) more because it offers an alternative,” Winans said.
In order to continue to boost output, club members are now working to increase the speed at which they complete the individual steps of the repurposing procedure.
According to Bloxsome, club members and Winans’ students have restored around 290 computers so far this year. “I am glad that our output is increasing with the input of (Winans’) classes,” he said. By Sara Rogers <srogers@hilite.org>
