Students for Education planning fundraiser to benefit homeless

Students for Education, a group here dedicated to promoting education among the less fortunate, plans to have a fundraiser to help combat homelessness in the coming weeks.

“We’re having our yearly fundraiser where we try to raise money for shelters in the Indianapolis area,” Ivy Yan, club president and junior, said. “Members are to contact everybody they know and ask for donations to help School on Wheels.”

According to Yan, the club worked with other volunteers to fundraise the previous year and plans to continue to do so. “We got over $45,000 for School on Wheels last year and this year’s goal is to raise $75,000,” Yan said. “There are volunteers at other shelters that help, so it’s not just us doing the fundraising.”

Yan also said the club plans to have a meeting in the coming weeks. “We’ll probably be discussing this fundraiser and ways to reach out to people,” Yan said.

“I leave most of the day-to-day functions of the club to the students,” sponsor Sherri Pankratz said.

Yan said the fundraiser will start in a few weeks once everything is set up. “The donations will be done through a Web site,” Yan said. “The Web site isn’t working yet, but it should be up and running within a couple days. This is more of a long-term fundraiser; we’ll be doing it for over a month.” By Henry Zhu <hzhu@hilite.org>
