Press Release from the City of Carmel

Due to the complexity of the drainage structure crossing under Keystone, there will be a full closure of Keystone between 116th Street and Carmel Drive from Friday, April 3, through Sunday, April 5. We chose to close this section of road during one of the weekends that Carmel Clay Schools are on Spring Break to take advantage of reduced traffic volumes. We also felt it was safer than shifting all Keystone traffic to only one side of Keystone while reducing travel to one lane in each direction over a period of at least two weekends.

Media center sponsors Beach Read Survival Contest

Since 2006 the media center has taken part in the “Beach Read Survivor Contest.” The goal is to get students encouraged to read over their one-week break, regardless of where they are. The contest is set up much like many of the reality television shows now, and only the best survives. Throughout the week students nominate potential “good reads” for spring break and then later vote for the best. The winning book and nominator will be announced on April 2, the day before spring break, and the winner will receive a $15 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble Bookstore.

Media Specialist Bonnie Grimble said entries would be taken up until 3:45 p.m. on March 30, and after that, the entries will go through the process of elimination.

“It’s fun. It encourages students to celebrate the idea of free reading and to, in a way, get lost in someone else’s story,” Grimble said. “It’s a good way to find relaxation over break.”

School board approves district budget cut

March 24, 2009

On March 23, the school board unanimously voted to approve the $1.5 million budget cut as presented at the Feb. 9 school board meeting.

Prior to the voting, school board member Gregory Phillips proposed a few amendments to the budget cut, including the reversal of the reduction of three ENL teachers in the elementary schools, which would total a $100,000 cut from the budget. However, his amendments were unsuccessful due to the lack of a second by another board member.

School board secretary Patricia Hackett also said she does not think this proposal is “perfect,” but all board members expressed the need to approve this budget cut, even in light of possible stimulus money from the government, to avoid a potentially dire financial circumstance for the district down the road.

“There are so many unknowns that I think it is only responsible to make some decisions so we won’t have a deficit, because schools can’t run on a deficit,” Superintendent Barbara Underwood said during the meeting.

“(The approved cut’s) present pain will save a lot of significant pain later,” Phillips also said during the meeting. “If we do not act tonight, we will face a dramatic problem very shortly. We have to move forward.”

The official budget cuts are posted here.

Of the students who participated in the Model U.N. conference on March 19 and 20, several won special awards for their work.

  • Seniors Annie Wu and Lily Zhao won Best Delegation in World Health Organization
  • Sophomore Radhika Agarwal won Best Delegate in World Health Organization
  • Seniors Tobi Haslett and Jamie Walker won Best Delegation in Human Rights Commission
  • Junior Rosemary Boeglin won Best Delegate in Human Rights Commission
  • Seniors Meher Ahmad and Nick Cooper won Best Delegation in Security Council
  • Junior Michelle Hu and Senior Peter Hua won Best Delegation in World Food Programme

According to Model U.N. sponsor Tracy Hadden, the conference was a simulation of the real United Nations where students work in one of nine different committees representing an assigned country in an attempt to write resolutions that solve real-world problems.

“I think they did a great job,” Hadden said. “They won proportionally a lot of the awards, and I think that shows how hard they worked and how dedicated they were to learning their positions.”
