WHJE to cover football game on Friday against Center Grove

August 31, 2009

According to Brian Spilbeler, WHJE station manager and adviser, WHJE will cover the varsity football game against Center Grove this Friday Sept. 4.

Spilbeler said WHJE is a student-run high school radio station that has been running since 1963. “On Fridays, we cover the football games home and away, and on Saturdays, we cover either junior varsity or freshman games that play at home.”

Charlie Newdecker, WHJE web manager and senior, said, “WHJE also covers basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer and some events with the school like the Homecoming festivities, Houndstock and Tailgate for Life. We play a mix of alternative, indie, top 30 and classic rock music.”

According to Spilbeler, 30 students operate the station and 16 of them run their own weekly show. “We are also working on developing our website WHJE.com. We stream live so people can listen to our station outside of the broadcast area,” he said. “We’re a public station so we don’t play commercials. We’re more interested in serving the community and the public.” By Amanda Nguyen <anguyen@hilite.org>

FCCLA to have call-out meeting Sept. 2

August 31, 2009

The  Family, Career and Community Leaders of America club (FCCLA) is scheduled to have its first meeting Wednesday, Sept. 2 before school at 7:10 a.m. in room B101 and again after school at 3:20 p.m. in room B176. Shameem Zia,  former secretary and senior, said she is looking forward to the call-out meeting.

“I think new club members who attend the call-out meeting will be able to learn more about what the club does and how they can get involved,” Zia said.

FCCLA sponsor Brooke Weekes said the call-out meeting will introduce new members as well as discuss the point system used in the club. The system rewards members for getting involved in the club by attending meetings, helping out with events and having an officer position in the club.

“ The point system is a great way to encourage members to get more involved in the club and they can learn more about it by attending the call out meeting,” Weekes said. By Erum Rizvi <erizvi@hilite.org>
