Sophomore Class to take PSAT on Oct. 13

The Sophomore Class is scheduled to take the PSAT on Oct. 13. And the Sophomore Class officers are planning to meet on Oct. 12 to discuss what the sophomores will do for the rest of the year.

Unlike the juniors’ scores, the sophomores’ PSAT scores do not count towards the National Merit Scholarship Program this year, Sophomore Class sponsor Kristi Leveque said.

“(During) sophomore year, (the sophomores) don’t know the test. They’re just handed the test,” Leveque said.

“Almost everybody I know is (taking the PSAT),” Sophomore Class president Chris Johnson said. “They passed out like a study guide booklet, and people have been working on that.”

Leveque, who also does PSAT prep, said there are about a hundred sophomores that signed up for prep classes this year. “Sophomores take what amounts to a practice-practice SAT, and based on the scores from the PSAT, Carmel can identify which students would have made the cutoff for National Merit had they taken the test their junior years,” Leveque said. “A little bit of preparation and some strategies on how to approach the test can make the difference between a few points, and sometimes a few points is all these kids need to become National Merits the following year.”

Along with the PSATs, sophomores have also been looking to the future since Homecoming Week ended, Leveque said. The Sophomore Class officers are planning to meet on Oct. 12 to review Homecoming this year and to set up preparations for next year’s sophomores.

“We are going to discuss how Homecoming went (and) what we can do to get more people involved in every aspect of Homecoming,” Leveque said.

Johnson, who plans on attending the meeting, said Homecoming went very well for the Sophomore Class this year, and there is only room for improvement for next year.

“(We’ll be talking about) what we can do better for next year and any other things we can help out this school year,” Johnson said. By Adele Zhou <[email protected]>
