Captain’s Meeting to occur on Jan. 14

The next Captain’s Meeting for winter sports captains will take place on Jan. 14 during SRT.

According to athletics director Jim Inskeep, the meeting supervisors made a few adjustments from the meetings with fall sport captains. In addition, the supervisors plan to focus on anti-hazing and leadership skills with the winter sport captains.

Inskeep said, “The curriculum continues to focus on building confidence of student-athletes and sharing different ideas from all athletic programs.”

According to Torrie Thornton, a basketball team captain, there are certain worries that all team captains seem to struggle with.

Thornton said, “The possibility of teammates not being followers or the time it takes for you to gain the respect from your team and prove why you were chosen is something all captains deal with, regardless of their sport.”

Not yet sure of how to be a leader of her team, Thornton said the Captain’s Meetings were able to give her an idea of the requirements and techniques that teammates expect.

“Just from the first meeting, I’ve been reminded that as a captain, I am being watched and looked up to,” Thornton said. “In order to have a successful season, I need to make sure I’m setting a good example whenever I can.” By Sheen Zheng
