French Club to honor Senior Class at Melting Pot

On May 13th French Club will travel to Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant located on 5650 E. 86th Street by Castleton Mall. According to French Club sponsor Andrea Yocum, French Club will be honoring the Senior Class who will graduate in May, as well as the officers who have guided French Club throughout the year.

According to Mona Shen, French Club President and senior, the Melting Pot is the perfect restaurant to attend for French Club’s final event of the year. “There aren’t many fondue restaurants out there, and the Melting Pot is the most well-known franchise for fondue. The word “fondue” in itself is French for “melted” and therefore is a great connection to French culture,” Shen said. Yocum said, “The Melting Pot gives us a chance to enjoy the traditional Swiss and French style cooking technique of fondue.”

According to Yocum, this is the third time in four years that the Melting Pot has been the club’s final trip. Shen said,” I am glad that this is starting to become a tradition. As an officer in a club, one of the things you hope to establish in your club is tradition.

Shen said, “At the dinner, the interaction is consistent with the 3 people you shared an actual melting pot with. I would like to order the Flaming Turtles Chocolate Fondue. It is my favorite fondue because they actually light the chocolate on fire. It is really amazing.” Yocum said, “I love this event because it is a chance for students to enjoy a very traditional European style of cooking that they will eat when they travel abroad.”

According to Shen, this year French Club only has to pay $15 for transportation and food. In years past, the Melting Pot trip has cost up to $30.

“Knowing that this is my last trip will make me enjoy it and appreciate it that much more. I am fortunate to have been president of this club for two straight years; not many people have that opportunity,” Shen said. “I feel that throughout my time in French Club, I have been learning new things every step of the way.  French Club has definitely taught and shaped me more than I could have ever imagined. If there is a French Club at Purdue, I will definitely join! I hope to retain my French and not let it fade away. By Tyler Meinz
