School board to have meeting Aug. 22, discuss goals for new school year

The school board will have a meeting on Aug. 22 to reevaluate school board goals and its strategic plan to accomplish them for the 2011-2012 school year.

School board president Tricia Hackett said, “A big emphasis this year is updating our strategic plan, such as by looking at curriculum issues.”

According to Hackett, the District Accreditation Leadership Team (DALT), a new group that ensures the school district meets certain educational standards, inspired some of these changes. She said, “It evaluates certain areas of the school system and advises us on what to work on and update, such as goals and strategy.”

Hackett said many goals, including a challenging curriculum, safety and counseling support, remain the same, and require only minor changes.

Senator and senior Alex Chong said he has seen some of these changes in effect at this school. “They changed some of the math courses to discovery courses,” he said. “Students always change, classes always change, so I think it’s important to look at revising school goals, even if I don’t agree with the new system.”

Hackett said the board members will also discuss funding changes and making a new health insurance contract for administrators. “We’d like to make administrator benefits more equal to teachers,’” she said. “We’re always looking for ways to put more money into the classroom.”
