National Honor Society to hold flag ceremony commemorating 9/11

The National Honor Society will dedicate three new flags to the school during its next meeting on Sept. 6 in order to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, according to sponsor Tony Willis. Although the organization invited Principal John Williams to the meeting to accept the flags on behalf of the school, which administrator will attend has not been determined.

“I think it’s important that we do this for the school, especially since we’ve gotten to the point when students are almost too young to remember the incident 10 years ago,” Willis said. “We’re getting to the last group that lived through the terror of 9/11 and we need to honor the brave people who survived.”

NHS president Nicholas Muller said each American flag will hang in a different cafeteria at Carmel and if possible, frames will be hung next to the flags in order to show that the NHS provided them.

“Mr. Willis, our sponsor, suggested to the officers that we provide the flags to the school as a nice gesture,” Muller said. “Most NHS members aren’t aware that the ceremony will be taking place at the next meeting, but I am sure they’ll enjoy what we’ve prepared.”

Willis said, “NHS is comprised of students volunteering for individual hours, but we always try to incorporate a project that will benefit all of the school.”

Last spring, Willis had ordered the flags after noticing every cafeteria was barren.

“I had been a hall monitor after school last year, and I realized Greyhound Station had no flags, which surprised me,” Willis said. “But hopefully, after this event, the NHS will help commemorate 9/11 and offer pride to the school.”
