Anime and Graphic Novel Group kicks off with All-Day Anime Fest

By: Cathy Chen <[email protected]>

Senior Jennifer Willoughby said she has been to the Anime Fests at the Carmel Clay Public Library before, and she plans to attend the eighth annual All-Day Anime Fest during fall break on Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Young Adult librarian Jamie Beckman said the All-Day Anime Fest is open to anyone in grades 6-12 who’s interested. The event is free, but those who plan to attend must turn in a permission slip to the Young Adult Services Department at the CCPL by next Thursday.

Beckman said, “We’re going to be watching a lot of anime, we’re going to be having our cosplay contest, lunch will be provided.” According to Beckman, people dress up as anime characters for the cosplay contest. There are three categories: best male character, best female character and best costume grand prize. The winners are voted on by those who attend and receive prizes.

Willoughby said she is looking forward to the All-Day Anime Fest. “A lot of times, that’s just what (anime) is—it’s the same stuff that’s available on CartoonNetwork. But it’s one thing to watch it by yourself, or maybe with one or two friends. It’s something entirely different to watch it with two or three dozen people who are dressed up in funny costumes, throwing stuff at the screen,” Willoughby said. “It’s really amazing.”
