Seniors of Kids’ Corner face many challenges each day while teaching the preschoolers, but the lockdown on March 2 due to the tornado warning gave seniors a new obstacle to work around. According to Kids’ Corner teacher Kimberly Lenzo, the seniors managed the situation well even though they’ve only been teaching since Feb. 21.

Cameron Morton, Kids’ Corner member and senior, said he and the seniors tried to focus on how to keep the classroom as normal as possible during the tornado warning.

“It wasn’t really that hard to control them because they didn’t know what was going on. (From preschool classroom) they couldn’t hear the announcement, so we just told them to go listen to a story in the part of the class that would be the safest for them and waited until the lockdown was over,” he said.

Lenzo said the classroom is a safe area of the school for the kids, so she and the seniors didn’t have to worry about moving them to another part of the school. Although the preschoolers had to stay at the high school until the lockdown was over, for the most part the seniors carried on with the usual activities and have returned this week for ‘Young Chef’ week.

According to Morton, each week has a theme and a few head teachers who create activities relating to the theme. For this week, preschoolers have participated in food-related crafts and measuring activities.

Morton said he’s excited to be the head teacher of the week but also has learned from not being the leader.

Morton said, “It’s a fun class, but it also shows you how much of a responsibility kids are. This will be useful for me when I start my own family years from now.”
