Media staff prepares for enrichment programs, book talks

As they do every year, the members of the media staff plan to introduce a wide array of events for the beginning of the year, according to media department chairperson Bonnie Grimble.

“We are planning to do some team teaching instruction activities, particularly for the English classes,” Grimble said. “We have already commenced with the book talks we do every year, and we are off and running.”

According to media specialist John Shearin, the book talks have been somewhat of a tradition, occuring at the beginning of every year.

“We have started and done a majority of the book talks this week, and it looks like we have a couple (of the events) coming up next week,” Shearin said. “The book talks involve the media staff talking about the ‘Rosie’ books, which are books that have won the Eliot Rosewater Indiana High School Book Award.”

In addition to book talks, another team teaching instruction activity that the media staff has already started in the future includes instruction on web and database research and the usage of the technology in the media center, according to Grimble. The media staff is planning more of such activities for the beginning of the school year.

“I think the tools in the media center are very resourceful,” junior Katie Gao, who said she employs the media center technologies often, said. “My friends and I use the printer, copier and things like that, so I think it’s great that the staff is teaching kids how to utilize (the technology).”

Grimble said she expects more successful activities in the media center for the year.

“The activities have started off very smooth, very well,” Grimble said. “There is the new teacher evaluation, so some trepidation there, but I think everything will be fine.”
