Classics Club plans mock gladiator battle

By: Lily Zhao <[email protected]>

The Classics Club, after the successful Latin/Greek Banquet, plans to organize two events that hopefully attract more members to the club. Sponsor Caren Rickett and vice president and junior Carmen Valverde-Paniagua expect to organize a gladiator fight day, which includes a mock fight, and speed meeting, where students meet other students as fast as they can.

Club officers plan to have announcements during SRT to help explain the development of these new ideas.

“Obviously, we hope to get more people interested and involved,” Valverde-Paniagua said. “That’s why we’re having new events and new ideas that no one has ever seen before.”

For the gladiator fight day event, Valverde-Paniagua said that she, along with president and junior Cassie Xu, both wanted to organize an event where club members could just have fun. These fights, as said by the vice president, would help combine different, historical forms of fighting styles.

Thus, two people at one time would fight with toilet paper rolls bounded together and try to hit each other. The goal is to render the opponent limbless. For this experience, Rickett said that she hopes the club can either host it in the gym or in a media center classroom.

As for the speed meeting, Valverde-Paniagua expects current club members to bring their friends, to meet as many people as possible. In the end, officers plan to have the members take fun, short quizzes for prizes. All in all, this exercise encourages students to come and visit the Classics Club.

“We want to show everyone what Classics Club has to offer,” Valverde-Paniagua said. “We’re bringing in new ideas and events. Hopefully, that makes us a success.”
