Roots and Shoots to host recycling drive

Carmel Area Roots and Shoots will host a free recycling drive in the stadium parking lot on Nov. 17, according to Lauren Gibson, organizer of the event and senior.

Students may bring appliances, computers, televisions, bicycles, batteries, lawn mowers, cell phones and anything else listed here. A fee of 5 dollars exists for each mattress, tube television and tube monitor. Paint and hazardous waste will not be accepted. Additionally, both new and used books will be collected at the drive and donated to a local non-profit organization.

“All of these items will be taken back to Disposal Alternatives Organization’s facilities to be recycled. In the past, each of our electronics recycling drives have collected between 25 and 75 tons of materials to be recycled, which helps prevents valuable, usable materials in these electronics from being thrown into landfills while simultaneously preventing toxins from being put into the landfills,” Gibson said.

According to Gibson, Roots and Shoots invites all members of the community to drop off old electronic devices at the event and celebrate America Recycles Day on Nov. 15.

“Recycling electronics at this drive is a responsible way to get rid of some of the clutter in your house,” she said.
