The search for the two current juniors who will lead the school next year as the Student Body President and the Speaker of the House, respectively, will soon be afoot. According to House sponsor Sarah Wolff, the election madness will begin on April 8 when ballot petitions are available in the Activities Office, and will end on April 24 when voting in the run-off election ends.
“All current juniors are eligible to run once they pick up a petition, get 50 student signatures, three teacher signatures and turn it in at the meeting in Greyhound Cafeteria on April 11 at 3:30 p.m.,” Wolff said. “Campaigning will go on from the 15th through the 18th. The top two candidates from that will go into a run-off election, which will go from the 22nd to the 24th.” All voting is done online.
Colette Ciresi, cabinet member and senior, was one of the juniors who decided to run for Student Body President last year.
“I’ve always been passionate about student government and I thought I’d be good at it. I made it to the run-off election, but I lost and decided to apply to be a cabinet member instead,” Ciresi said.
Despite the loss, Ciresi shares some advice with potential candidates.
“Make sure you have a platform and present yourself well. How hard you try on your campaign is a reflection of how well you’ll do in the position that you’re running for,” Ciresi said. “Don’t bash your opponent or break any of the election rules.”
After the elections are over, House will have one last spring event that will be determined at the meeting on March 20. According to Wolff, the options that House members may vote on include a volleyball tournament, a spring carnival, capture the flag, an Amazing Race-style activity or a baseball tailgate. The event will take place sometime in May.
