Since 2006 the media center has taken part in the “Beach Read Survivor Contest.” The goal is to get students encouraged to read over their one-week break, regardless of where they are. The contest is set up much like many of the reality television shows now, and only the best survives. Throughout the week students nominate potential “good reads” for spring break and then later vote for the best. The winning book and nominator will be announced on April 2, the day before spring break, and the winner will receive a $15 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble Bookstore.
Media Specialist Bonnie Grimble said entries would be taken up until 3:45 p.m. on March 30, and after that, the entries will go through the process of elimination.
“It’s fun. It encourages students to celebrate the idea of free reading and to, in a way, get lost in someone else’s story,” Grimble said. “It’s a good way to find relaxation over break.”
