Having a winning record of 14-2-1, the women’s varsity soccer team hopes to defeat 11-2-4 Zionsville in the opening round of the Sectional tournament.
According to Head Coach Frank Dixon, the team is in the toughest Sectional in the state. “The winner of Sectional 17 will be the team that makes the fewest mistakes,” Dixon said via e-mail. If the Greyhounds win tonight’s match-up, they are scheduled to play the winner of the game between number three-ranked Noblesville and number eight-ranked Hamilton Southeastern.
The Greyhounds, currently ranked number one in the Metropolitan conference, kicked off their season with a loss to the number seven-ranked Zionsville with a final score of 0-1. This ended up as the team’s only loss all season. According to Dixon, the team is ready for the tournament and has improved since the beginning of the season.
“(In order to win these sectional games, the team needs to) play as a team and play up to their ability. We start seven underclassmen at times and they are an entire season more experienced than they were in our first game,” Dixon said.
The game again Zionsville is scheduled for Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. It will take place at Zionsville High School. Dixon said, “I believe that if we play every game to our potential we will win a state title. If we don’t play at that level, we could lose our first game.” By Alex Mackall <[email protected]>
