The Science Olympiad team will be attending its Regional competition on Feb. 23. This competition will take place at Butler University. Competitions consume most of the day, with the events starting around 9 a.m. and ending with the awards ceremony around 3 to 4 p.m. Due to the cancellation of its previous competition, this will be the team’s first time going to any tournament this year.
During the awards ceremony, judges announce the top three to four teams and then overall scores are tallied. The top three teams go to the State competition in March. From there, the top two teams at State go to the national level.
“We normally go to State. The past several years we have either gotten first or second place at the State level,” president and senior Johanna Hutchins said.
The team has been preparing for the upcoming competition by meeting every Wednesday after school for an hour.
“Most of the studying has been individually, but some people have been working together to practice some of the building events,” Hutchins said.
“As (Regional) gets closer, we may need to practice on some Saturdays to make sure we are ready,” Joshua Barthuly, vice president and senior, said.
“We go to State every year. We just do,” Barthuly said, “We’ll get first place, I’m sure. But I’m sure I just jinxed it. We’ll see.”
