The Carmel Clay Schools school board plans to have a workshop session 7 p.m. on Sept. 15 and a regular session 7 p.m. on Sept. 28, according to school board president Layla Spanenberg.
“(A workshop session) is when we have a particular topic that we unpack and have presentations. Last year, we used those workshops to really dig deep into some of the priorities and goals that we have set for the school district. So Dr. Wahl and his team will present, and the presentations are usually done by teachers who are working in the district to help support those initiatives and some of the various committee members,” Spanenberg said.
She also said the workshop sessions are beneficial to the public.
“It’s a great opportunity for the general public to better understand what’s going on and for the board members to see what action is happening,” Spanenberg said.
The regular board session will be on Sept. 28. During regular board meetings, the school board takes action on business, policy and financial decisions. They take official voting action during regular meetings.
In the upcoming regular session, Spanenberg said the school board plans to adopt new legislative priorities, overlaying them onto the existing 2014-2015 legislative priorities. She said the new priorities will better advocate for the school district and for flexibility in local decision making.
GKOM and senior Ryan Jou welcomes these new changes. He said, “Personally I think it’s a great shift, because in the past we’ve had a couple changes that could affect the whole school district, and now they’re including students in the process. I feel that it can only get better from here.”
