Grace Chuck, Key Club member and freshman, opens her box of donations from trick-or-treating. The money she raised will count for volunteer hours. Club members can also donate medicine to earn volunteer hours for IU Global Medical Brigade.

On Nov. 7, Key Club members will volunteer at the American Diabetes Association Gala. The gala will raise money through an auction for diabetes research and care for diabetics. Students who participate in this event will check out guests’ auction purchases, package them up, deliver purchases to guests and clean up afterwards. The gala will be at the Indiana Roof Ballroom on 140 W. Washington St. from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Club members interested in volunteering for this event should sign up at the next Key Club meeting on Nov. 5.
According to club sponsor Katie Kelly, students should sign up for as many volunteer opportunities as possible.

“Now is the best time to get hours because even though there might be classwork and sports and other extracurricular activities, the pressure of finals hasn’t settled in yet. There’s also many chances to get group hours right now, because all the organizations out there are holding charity events,” she said.

Ben Sun, Key Club member and junior, said he will be getting hours by donating, rather than coming to many events.

“I don’t have much time to do many volunteer events, but I still need hours. So, since Key Club has a bunch of donation opportunities, I can still get my hours,” he said.

One such donation opportunity for hours is the Indiana University Global Medical Brigade. The organization sends vitamins and pain relievers to third world countries, where it’s hard to obtain these things. Students can bring in bottles of pain relievers like Tylenol or Ibuprofen, as well as multivitamins to rooms E232 and H222. Two bottles will count for one hour, which is the maximum club members can earn.
