Mudsocks satisfies variety of tastes

By: Reid Conner <[email protected]>

Despite the fact that it is fairly new, Mudsocks Grill is a fun, delicious experience in an appealing environment. The first thing patrons will notice when they walk in the door is the large, square stone fireplace they have set in the middle of the waiting area. Although not lit during summer, it’s a nice touch that could be nicer later in the year when they have a crackling fire going. Gray stone dominates the scene at Mudsocks, with stone walls and barriers set throughout the restaurant.

Televisions tuned to a variety of sporting events, news channels and even a trivia game line the walls. There is something to watch for everyone, from basketball and football to NASCAR and horse racing. The atmosphere at Mudsocks is a nice change from most restaurants. The stone walls make the restaurant look different and unique and set it apart from most other places.

The Mudsocks menu has a wide variety of foods to satisfy any customer’s tastes including vegetarians. They have everyday appetizers such as mozzarella sticks and buffalo wings, but the real treats are their self-named Mudskins and their generously topped ultimate nachos.

The menu includes a selection of soups, salads and wraps for someone with a lighter appetite and then, of course, a variety of sandwiches and burgers. They have the Caprese on ciabatta for vegetarians, which is a tomato, cheese, and veggie sandwich on a ciabatta roll. If you’re willing to spend about $10 to $15 more, Mudsocks also has the choice of larger entrees and steaks, including a $25 to $30 filet mignon – basically, all the stuff you’d expect to find at any other grill-type restaurant in town.

The food itself is surprising – it was actually really good. We were kind of in a hurry when we went and didn’t hesitate to tell our waitress we were pressed for time. The appetizer came out in a little over five minutes along with a basket of bread, with the rest of the meal probably five minutes after that.

It was surprisingly fast service for a pretty nice sit down restaurant and the taste of the food was not hurried at all. The Mudskins were very good. Mudsocks’s take on loaded potato wedges goes very well with ketchup, though the ranch dipping sauce that came with the dish was a little bit bland. The bread, too, exceeded expectations; after all, how good can a piece of bread be? This bread, though, is soft, buttery and warm and it almost melts in your mouth.

As for the main course, the Mudsocks burger (cheddar cheese, bacon, onion and BBQ sauce) was just as good if not better than any other BBQ bacon burger I’ve ever had, but the steak fries with it were decent at best; they were a little mushy. The Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich (salami, grilled chicken, swiss cheese and mayonnaise) was not very good. The combination of nearly blackened chicken, salami and chipotle mayonnaise made for one of the weirdest tasting sandwiches I’ve had in a while. The side of macaroni and cheese was decent, not anything impressive though.

Overall, Mudsocks Grill was a fun experience in a pretty cool environment with great food. Anyone who loves sports and a good meal and can appreciate a well-decorated interior will enjoy a visit to Mudsocks.
