Debate team currently without coach

Scheduled to go on maternity leave after first semester, Amanda Richmond will not return as debate team coach this year, leaving the position vacant. According to Richmond, it is up to the activities office to decide her replacement.

According to Ivy Yan, debate team captain and junior, not much can be done with a team that doesn’t have a sponsor.

“Unfortunately, without a sponsor, we cannot have a callout yet, let alone a fundraiser to draw people to the debate program,” Yan said, via e-mail.

Yan said she is very optimistic about new freshmen joining the team this year, which previously had about 15 members.

“Of course Richmond is a crucial part of our team, and we all love her,” Yan said. “But, even though we don’t have her official help this year, we can still have an awesome year. We have a lot of talented debaters on our team, and I’m hoping that we can send a few to Nationals this summer in Kansas City, MO.”

Now weeks into the school year, Yan said she is concerned about the team falling behind other schools, losing valuable time without a coach or any meetings.

“If the administration doesn’t find us a coach within about the next two weeks, it will be very difficult to catch up with debaters from the other schools, since preparation and research are crucial to succeed at tournaments, which start around the end of the month,” Yan said. “We’re all hoping.”
