While I did find this article cute and appropriate for the season, I’m really upset at how heteronormative and white this article is. Yes, straight couples are the majority, but I would’ve loved to see not only gay couples but couples of different ethnicities aside from white people. As a gay student myself,
by only showing the majority, you’re not giving other students who aren’t white and heterosexual a chance to be represented in your work (I may be white, but I still don’t see enough gay people or even those of other ethnicities represented a lot). You’re shutting them down. Maybe you tried to reach out to them, but maybe you didn’t. Either way, not including them is a disservice.
I just wanted to let you know that I admire the design for this article, and as an Intro to Newspaper student at my own school, this article’s basis is really sweet. But having it be entirely focused on happy and straight white couples keeps marginalized voices in the minority, and that makes me upset. Feature them and don’t exclude them.
