Men’s cross-country team looks ahead to tournament

By: Mitch Ringenberg <[email protected]>

The men’s cross-country team is looking forward to more success this year. “I’m hoping that the team this year is just as good, if not better,” Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. “I’m seeing a lot of good things from this team, and they’re a very likable bunch of guys.” The freshmen practice after school, while junior varsity and varsity practice in the mornings and after school.

There is a jogging class that runners can take first period if they do not want to practice in the mornings, but that class usually fills up rapidly. Therefore, runners not in the jogging class have to meet in the morning for practice. Members new to the JV team are now going to have to adjust from only having practice once after school to having it twice a day. Steven Gomez, a JV runner and sophomore, said, “It’s sometimes hard to get up that early in the morning for practice, but I know that in the end it’s helping me become a better runner in the long run. Also, it helps wake me up in the morning, so I have more energy when school starts.”

One of the more important cross-country meets this year will be the Carmel Classic Invitational tomorrow at Greyhound Park. The invitational will begin at 9:30 a.m.

On Sept. 15, the team will meet in Louisville, KY for the Trinity Invitational. This meet will take place at 9 a.m. After that, the next invitational will be held at Culver. “Culver is one of our biggest meets of the year,” Koeppen said.

On Oct. 9, the Sectional will be held here at Greyhound Park, at 5 p.m. Shortly after that, the Regional will be held at Brebeuf on Oct. 13 at 11 a.m.

Obviously, the biggest cross-country events of the year will be the IHSAA meets. The first of these meets will be the Semistate at Northview Christian Church. This will be held on Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. Finally, the biggest meet of the year, the State Finals, will take place Oct. 27 at 1:45 p.m. This meet will be held in Terre Haute. “I’m really confident in how our team’s going to perform this year,” said Gomez. “We’re in really great shape and we’ve all been practicing harder than ever.”
