Women’s soccer team defeated in Sectional tournament

Having only lost one game the entire regular season, the women’s soccer team entered the Sectional tournament with hopes of beating Zionsville. However, the Greyhounds began the post-season tournament on Oct. 13 the same way they started off their regular season, with a 1-0 loss to the Zionsville Eagles.

According to Shae Desmond, team captain and senior, Carmel deserved the win. She said, “Even the Zionsville coach said in the paper that we were the better team and probably should have won the game. We had so many opportunities to score. We just couldn’t.”

Head Coach Frank Dixon agreed via e-mail. He said “Most people, including some Zionsville parents, thought that Carmel was very unlucky in losing and played a great game. I think our girls played very well, and in the eyes of many, including the Zionsville coach, Carmel was the better team, but the better team doesn’t always win. ”

The only goal of the game was scored by Zionsville in the first half. According to both Desmond and Dixon, the Greyhounds fought hard to catch back up. They continued to get shots at the goal but failed to score.

Dixon said, “The only thing that would have changed the outcome of the game would have been for us to score some goals.  It just was not our night to put the ball in the net.  That was partly our fault and partly because Zionsville defended very well.”

Desmond said, “(We had) a good group of kids and a good season, but it didn’t work out. We had a good time even though we didn’t win. We deserved it more. I guess you could say it was just bad luck.” By Alex Mackall <[email protected]>
