Transportation department has more responsibility with winter weather

Snow is starting to fall as the heart of the winter approaches, which means the Carmel Clay Schools Transportation Department has to be especially sharp and on top of their game. As the road conditions continue to worsen, the transportation department must be even more cautious than before, knowing they are responsible for making sure everyone gets to and from school safely.

“We have a very important job,” Ron Farrand, director of facilities and transportation, said. “We’re responsible for keeping all kids riding the bus safe.”

This is why, if they don’t think they will be able to easily get everyone to and from school safely, they must recommend that the superintendent cancel school.

“We don’t have the final say, but we do submit a recommendation to the superintendent, which, as far as I can remember, has always been the decision she ends up going with,” Farrand said.

Farrand said their decision-making progress includes assessing the current road conditions and also looking to see what other school districts have decided.

“Everyone always wants a snow day, but I can’t remember a time when I thought they made the wrong call about having school or cancelling it,” senior Jason Shaw said. By Charlie Browning <[email protected]>
