Senate, House focus on Dance Marathon

Dance Marathon is scheduled for Feb. 20, from 4 to 10 p.m. in the freshman cafeteria. For an interested student to become a registered dancer, he must contribute a minimum of $80, all of which will be donated to Riley Hospital for Children. The last day to turn in the money is Jan. 19, and the following meeting for all dancers is during SRT on Jan. 21.

The event has been around Indiana colleges for years, but it didn’t come to this school until 2005 as a tribute to Ashley Krouse, a former student body president. Krouse attended Indiana University, where she was actively involved in the Dance Marathon activities on the Bloomington campus. When she was involved in a fatal automobile accident, students and faculty alike decided to host the event at this school in honor of Krouse.

Along with House, which has been devoting most of its time and resources to the successful fifth annual Dance Marathon since the beginning of the school year, Senate members are also now dedicating their full attention to the school-wide event, according to Senate sponsor Michelle Foutz.

Although this year’s event date is still over month away, Foutz said both Senate and House alike have much to do for the event to run smoothly. During the event, Senate and House students will be involved in running a variety of activities from the banner of painted-on handprints to games designed to keep dancers moving and on their feet. According to student body president Steven Brisley, the games themselves have yet to be decided on and organized.

Additionally, while a large amount of donations come from the volunteer dancers, the event also requires the help of corporate sponsors which the Senate and House are actively continuing to recruit. These corporate sponsors provide anything from refreshments for the dancers to matching money or items that can be auctioned off for money.

Brisley said these items have a significant role in how much money will be raised for Riley Hospital, and he said they will be autioned off during a spaghetti dinner which will be hosted at this school on the evening of Feb. 18.

Foutz said first-time dancers can expect enthusiasm and passion that is so strong, it is almost tangible.”I think a lot of students are blown away by all the passion there is for this cause and for Riley,” she said. “Throughout the night, time passes very quickly, between dancing, eating and activities. We also have speeches from kids that Riley helped, and those speeches are always very touching.” By Beverly Jenkins <[email protected]>
