Students in CCRC wait to meet with a counselor about their essays on Sep. 29, 2022. Each student wants to double check their essay while they wait during an SSRT help session, the room silent as they wait. 

Senior and Junior Night will occur on Sept. 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Freshman Cafeteria. The event includes an introduction to the college planning process, along with multiple breakout sessions to help students learn how to proceed after high school. According to College and Career Programming and Resources Center (CCRC) coordinator Melinda Stephan, it’s an opportunity for families to feel what will happen after high school.

“It’s [an event] geared towards juniors and seniors, but really anybody can come,” Stephan said. “It’s definitely good for parents.”

Stephan said right now is a stressful time for seniors. Seniors come in for help with applying to colleges or jobs after high school. CCRC hosts essay help sessions every SSRT except for late starts. Each Friday, CCRC has help sessions all day.

“Those help sessions are there to help wherever the student is in the process,” Stephan said. “We have some students who come in and don’t even know where to begin. We also have some students who come in with three essays who want us to give them feedback.”

Senior Jasmine Tallton came to CCRC for the first time during SSRT to get help with her essays for college. She plans on attending IUPUI after high school.

“I kinda just wish that I would’ve started this when I was a junior instead of waiting until I was a senior,” Tallton said.

Stephans said that CCRC helps all students who want to go on to college, join the military, or get a job.

“Whatever our seniors need, they can come to one of the SSRT help sessions for it,” she said.
