Hello! I’m Tsion Daniel and I am so excited to be the Acumen Editor-in-Chief this year for my third year on staff! In previous years, I served as an Acumen Associate Editor, a Feature Reporter and as the Acumen Copy Editor. Grove said, “So springtime is (when we have) our two big (events) every year which are Rileython and Radiothon. Im still working with the team thats running the Dance Marathon to kind of figure out the details of that but with Rileython, (we will) probably start to plan that in the next week or so.”

Zach Browning, WHJE co-sports manager and senior, said he encourages people to listen to the broadcasts. “If you cant make it to a game obviously, the atmosphere is great, especially at the Eric Clark activity center where the Greyhounds play their home games. But if you cant make it to a game, if its a road game (or if) you dont want to go out (because) its a snowy night and winter, just turn it on,” Browning said. “ I would like to say that we provide a good broadcast for our listeners, so they can understand what is going on in the game. But I think it helps us (broadcasts) out (as well) because it gives us more experience. Overall, I think you would enjoy it if you were able to listen.”

WHJE co-sports manager and senior Gabriel “Gabe” Perrin is in charge of sports broadcasts in sports including football, women’s basketball, hockey, softball and baseball. However, Perrin said his role is not only about sports broadcasting. Perrin said, “(The most important part of my role is) being a leader, especially for the sophomores and the juniors, that may be in the next coming years in my place as a manager. (It is important to help them) get that experience earlier in the year, so that they are ready to tackle bigger tests later on in their career (GABRIEL “GABE” PERRIN/SUBMITTED PHOTO).”

Radiothon, a fundraiser for WHJE, will occur on April 17 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on April 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. In this broadcast, there will be numerous live shows. WHJE radio adviser Dominic James said, “Because we are doing 12 hours each day of live shows, I think it shows the breadth and depth of the station and the students are really key to that weekend to do stuff to raise awareness.”

The second annual Rileython will occur on Feb. 27 at 8 a.m. There are several ways to donate to this cause, including dining at one of the restaurants listed above. Jessica “Jess” Cooper, WHJE events manager and senior, said, Our fundraising goal right now is $3,000; I’m hoping to top that. We’re close to beating our total from last year. We are at $2,100 right now so I’m hoping to beat our goal of $3,000, fingers crossed.”

In 2016, freshman Ava Beckman and her father, David Beckman, collect food from the kitchen counter on Thanksgiving. Beckman said her family normally celebrates Thanksgiving with many family members, but this year, due to the coronavirus, will most likely only celebrate Thanksgiving with immediate family. Beckman said, “I would say just go ahead and make those changes to be safe. It’s better to be safe than sorry. I’d say you would rather have a smaller Thanksgiving celebration and not have anybody get sick, instead of having a big celebration and then half those people have COVID and it’s a very dangerous virus, somebody could be in the hospital, somebody could pass away.”

Conley said she thinks this event can still be fun in spite of the safety precautions participants must take due to COVID-19. “I feel like with everything that’s been going on, you know, like we’ve been in quarantine for the past five months or something, I feel like this is kind of like a good way to get out of the house and kind of try to go back to normal,” Conley said.
