Design for CHS plans to host the “Build a Bench Challenge” with the City of Carmel, which promotes a better sense of the community and social harmony. “This is just another way to create conversation and simply encourage people to be social with one another, since all that you see these days are people who are continuously on their phones and other devices,” said Vikas Maturi, co-president of Design for CHS.
The “Build a Bench Challenge” encourages both students and adults who live in Carmel to use their imagination to design a bench for the future of Carmel. Bench designs that are submitted will be judged based on its creativity, predicted ability to encourage social gathering and discussion, innovativeness and aesthetics. Submissions will start on October 13, remaining all the way until December 21. Bench designs can be submitted to [email protected]. The Design for CHS members, along with the Mayor of Carmel, will only choose one design that they feel will promote social interactions the best.
“This contest is a competition to see which bench design has the best blend of engineering science, creativity, and social influence,” said Maturi.
Not only does this contest provide residents of Carmel exploration in creativity, but also spreads awareness and understanding of the impact and design of everyday life. “This project is very unique, since it is a mix of imagination and the emphasis of why designs are so important to everyday life in our society,” said Maturi.
“I’m just here to support creative people who have creative ideas. I thought this sounded like a very innovative and creative club not only for its students, but for the society,” said Mrs. Mitchener, the club sponsor for Design Club. “I am more than happy to sponsor the Design Club and work with all of them. They’re just great kids that want to make a change in our society.”
