The Colts continue to assert themselves as contenders for the Super Bowl after five straight wins against AFC opponents. Indianapolis (5-2) will travel to Pittsburgh (4-3) on Sunday afternoon and will look to continue that streak. Here’s the complete preview for this weekend’s matchup.
When: 4:25 PM EST (CBS)
The Colts do have some injury concerns heading into this weekend, with both Reggie Wayne (elbow) and Trent Richardson (hamstring) missing practice this week. Wayne will miss the game on Sunday.
The Steelers are coming off of a 30-23 win over the Houston Texans on Monday night. Le’veon had almost 150 combined yards from scrimmage. Stopping the running game will be crucial, something the Colts defense did well against the Bengals. If the running game is stopped early, the Steelers will be forced to take to the air, where receiver Antonio Brown has had a pro-bowl caliber season. The Colts have been effective in shutting down team’s number one receivers throughout the year. Look for a lot of man on man matchups between Brown and Vontae Davis, who is having a pro bowl season himself.
If the Colts defense can shut down both Bell and Brown, they will have little trouble against the otherwise weak Steelers offense.
On the other side of the ball, the Colts will look to attack an average Steelers secondary that is ranked 13th in the league against the pass. With Reggie Wayne ruled out for the matchup, TY Hilton will have to continue to step up. Hilton is currently fourth in the NFL with 711 receiving yards. Indianapolis will also have to rely on Hakeem Nicks and Donte Moncrief to keep the high-octane Colts offense rolling. Tight ends Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener will also look to attack the Steelers linebackers in the passing game.
If the Colts can control their own mistakes then they should have no problem winning the game against an inferior Steelers team. However, the Colts have been known to hurt themselves after building a lead. Two fumbles in scoring territory against the Bengals last week could have resulted in a loss. Indianapolis lost a first half lead to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 due to a late fumble. They also allowed both the Ravens and Texans to claw their way back into games that should have been closed out.
Despite sudden lapses in games, the talent of Indianapolis has allowed them to win nevertheless. Even with a couple of mistakes the Colts should be able to leave Pittsburgh with a victory.
Prediction: Indianapolis 34, Pittsburgh 17
