The men’s varsity football team takes on its 4A rival Cathedral this Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Tickets are five dollars and all sports passes are permitted.
The team is coming off a vigorous offseason along with a scrimmage against Lawrence Central, both of which head varsity coach Myron “Mo” Moriarity thinks tremendously helped prepare the team for this big game.
“We had a great preseason and the scrimmage went well,” Moriarity said. “We were able to use the scrimmage to evaluate what needs to be fixed.”
The team had a lot of key players graduate this year, and a lot of new players that haven’t seen much playing time are now getting some opportunities. Yet, senior and wide receiver Nick Logan said he doesn’t see this lack of experience as an issue.
“I don’t think the lack of experience will hurt us at all this season,” Logan said. “We are put in game situations every day in practice and succeed.”
Coming off of an exciting come from behind victory against the Irish last season, Moriarity said the team has an elevated level of excitement for this game.
“Our school playing Cathedral in anything will get people pretty pumped,” he said. “But with the start of school, this being the first game, it will be a great atmosphere and expect it to be a packed house.”
Moriarity added that a big factor in this game will be student support. “Students need to realize that they are worth 7 points,” he said. “Students need to get pumped up, because they don’t realize how important their support really is.”
