Note: The observations have been postponed to Oct. 5.
Astronomy Club will set up telescopes in front of the school to observe stars on the night of Oct. 4, as long as the weather conditions show clear skies.
“We’re trying to do more observing using telescopes,” sponsor Keith Turner said. The club plans to set up more telescopes in front of the school around November as well. Other goals for the year include learning to run the planetarium and making planetarium shows, as well as possibly taking a field trip.
“We’ve taken field trips to the Ball State Observatory in the past,” Turner said. A goal of his is to have NASA lend a space shuttle tire to the school for three years so it can be displayed in the media center.
“We’re pretty much doing the same thing as the year before,” Yanying Chen, club president and sophomore, said. Chen and sophomores Lisa Campbell, Celeste Cozzarelli and Emily McLaughlin enjoy learning about astronomy.
“I’m interested in astronomy as a profession,” Chen said. Campbell, Chen, Cozzarelli and McLaughlin are currently making a planetarium presentation to teach people about galaxies.
