The literacy-centered group Students for Education plans to start its first fundraising activity in a few weeks. Aghilah Nadaraj, vice president and senior, said the club will have a meeting soon to discuss any remaining details.
“We’ve decided on selling hot chocolate down the trail later in the semester, but we want to have a meeting so everybody knows what we’re doing,” Nadaraj said. “Everybody’s been so busy tutoring that we officers don’t know who can help us with the fundraising activity, and then we also need to get permission from the school to do it.”
According to sponsor Sherri Pankratz, the club’s meetings and activities are almost entirely run by students.
“I leave most of the day-to-day functions of the club to the students,” Pankratz said.
Nadaraj said the club has focused mostly on its tutoring activities for the last semester. Though members have done some fundraising on their own, she said club officers have been busy establishing a system for members to teach at School on Wheels.
“We’ve spent a lot of time getting new members used to tutoring and figuring out a schedule so members knew what they were doing,” Nadaraj said. “Fundraising is really important and all, but the focus of the club is still tutoring and helping the kids.”
