Chess club members plan to host an official United States Chess Federation (USCF) rated tournament in the spring. There has been no new information on the club T-shirt sales.
“I’m really looking forward to (the tournament). It seems like a great opportunity for the school and the club,” Matt McDonald, club member and freshman, said.
“I don’t know much about the tournament they are planning…other than that it will be on a Saturday probably in the spring,” club sponsor Margaret Winans said via email.
According to Brian McDonald, club officer and senior, there will be sections based on grade level, and although club officers have not yet determined specifics, there will most likely be around five rounds of chess. McDonald said he thinks the USCF tournament will start a good tradition at CHS.
“(The tournament) could help to promote Chess Club, as it will provide a more easily accessible tournament than usual,” Brian said via email. “Winning earns bragging rights, not much else.”
The club has made no advancements in the T-shirt design contest. According to McDonald, the club members will try to get this underway during second semester.
Students can find more information about club meetings outside of school and quick updates on club happenings on the club Facebook page, called “Chess Club the Best Club.”
