Diversity Focus Group (DFG) members plan to have a meeting the week after winter break to plan a field trip to Oliver Missionary Baptist Church on Feb. 16. to see Jeff Henderson, a chef on the Food Network who once spent time in prison, according to DFG sponsor Joseph Schaller.
Schaller said Henderson was specifically chosen because he is sponsored by U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) in association with Steward & Associates Speaker Series and partners with the Olivet Missionary Baptist Church for their annual Black History Month Celebration.
Schaller said, “DFG members can benefit from going to see Jeff Henderson because it is a positive, motivational message of reaching one’s full potential.”
Langston Newton, DFG member and senior, said, “It certainly is a great thing to go see somebody speak, especially somebody with a unique background. It’s always good to hear their story and how they rose to the position that they earned. It’s also good for us to hear this, as the DFG, because we try to strive to see how people have struggled with diversity and also try to reach out to our community.”
Schaller said this is the second year that DFG members have been able to hear a speaker. Last year, he said, DFG members went to see Roland Martin, who is a featured reporter on CNN.
Newton said, “It was definitely something I would do again, and I’m glad this year we get to see another speaker.”
