At their next meeting on Jan. 26, members of the Muslim Student Association at this school will discuss and finalize plans for their upcoming fundraiser for Syria. Club meetings are held after school on Blue Thursdays in Room A232.
The Zakat Foundation, which helps Muslims in need, will likely receive the money raised by the fundraiser. Fariha Hossain, vice president of the Muslim Student Association and junior, said that the fundraiser itself will probably be a bake sale.
Meanwhile, in international news, the situation in Syria is worsening. Some Syrian soldiers have defected and joined rebels, and the fighting seems to be getting closer to Damascus. UN officials are working on a new draft resolution on Syria, submitted by Russia.
Muslims in North America have also been involved in raising awareness about the situation in Syria. “All around America and Canada, people have been having flash mobs to raise awareness in Syria, and a few people at our school have actually been a part of them,” Hossain said.
Club sponsor Dora Mulcahy said, “(The members) enjoy and agree how important it is to be involved.”
