Following the first round of invitational competition at Brebeuf Jesuit High School, the Academic Superbowl team assessed its strengths and weaknesses and intends to continue improving and preparing. The second round of invitational competition will take place March 22 at Ben Davis High School.
According to club sponsor Matt Dillon, the first round of competition provided a great deal of insight into his student’s capabilities.
“Ultimately, the first competition went well,” he said. “The leaders orchestrated their teams well, and it was obvious that the students were devoted to their cause. With the first round of competition behind us, we know how we compare to the other teams and can improve upon our weaknesses.”
Nick Muller, social studies squad captain and senior, added,“What we learned from the competition is that we need to focus on the source material given for the competition, as many of the questions seemed to come from those books.”
According to Muller, the Brebeuf invitational serves primarily to allow the teams to evaluate each other in terms of knowledge and application. In competing with three other prominent Indiana high schools, the social studies squad finished second, with Brebeuf placing first. However, in the interdisciplinary round, which includes all five subjects, Carmel placed first.
With just over a month remaining until the regional competition, Muller claims that he and his fellow team members are doing their best to continue improving and working toward a first place finish.
“We have another invitational coming up at Ben Davis,” Muller said. “Truthfully, the invitational competitions are really just practices for the regional competition in April that qualifies us for the state competition in May. I hope for us to be very knowledgeable and prepared for that regional competition. So, I expect my team to continue to read their source material as assigned.”
