After adding the new and healthier Salveo chips and cheese balls to the school lunch menu, the Freshman Cafeteria staff members said they were surprised to see that these new options were struggling with sales. According to Karen Patterson, Freshman Cafeteria manager, sales had been going great after the healthier options first arrived. She even managed to sell three whole boxes of the new chips within a few days, but now, she’s struggling just to sell out one box in a week. Seeing that these new food ideas were not doing so well, the cafeteria members were eager to learn new ways to get students to eat healthier.
“We are always looking for new ideas,” Patterson said. Patterson and several other staff members went to the School Nutrition Association (SNA) in Indianapolis recently, and there they were able to learn about new healthy food options which they might consider adding to the menu. Two of the new food ideas that Patterson was able to taste were whole grain muffins and whole wheat crackers. Patterson claims that the muffins might be a good option for the school, for they taste good and are healthier than the average muffin.
Freshman Justin Chambers is excited for these new changes to come along.
“The cafeteria has a variety of options to choose from,” Chambers said. He said he is interested in seeing the new options that the cafeteria might add to the menu and hopes that the cafeteria continues to make these changes so the menu can keep improving.
