After hosting an audition process that found five new members, ComedySportz is learning to play as a team in its first few practices. According to Kinsey Erickson, ComedySportz veteran member and senior, the transition is coming along well.
“We got to see what our new members really, really excel at,” she said.” For example, our new member (junior) Mary (Caltrider) is really great at doing some really funky accents, so she came onto some characters that were just out of this world and really fun to watch.”
ComedySportz sponsor Jim Peterson said that the practices are run on a set schedule.
“Each Friday we rehearse after school,” he said. “There are Saturday group training sessions down at the national ComedySportz Theatre which is (in) downtown Indianapolis. The professionals run those.”
According to Peterson, exhibition matches start in January and home matches begin in February.
In the meantime, according to Erickson, the team has mixed in a few novel elements into practices.
“We had a couple workshops where we learned some new games, which is really exciting,” she said. “ComedySportz is always growing as an event, so even people who have been on the team for a couple of years are still learning.”
Erickson said that it’s important that she take charge in her senior year as the season gets underway. “I definitely have to make sure I’m setting a good example for our new members and that if they have a question I’m there to be able to answer and help them how I would’ve wanted to be helped,” she said.
