As winter break comes to an end, the nurses in the health center are beginning to update students’ files and sending them to teachers for the new semester, according to nurse coordinator Kandyce Hardie
“After winter break, we usually get several new enrollments that come to the school, so we process their charts and work on getting their immunizations up-to-date,” Hardie said. “We work—because it’s a new semester—(on) getting student action plans for students with high-risk diagnoses, such as asthma, diabetes, life-threatening allergies. We get those plans out to their teachers so they’re aware of their students’ (conditions).”
Hardie said while most of these students already have all of their medical information up-to-date, the nurses have to send out these action plans to teachers in case of any changes in the students’ schedules.
As the nurses hit the ground running in the second semester, so too do the nurses’ aides as they assist the nurses with small tasks throughout the day. One of these nurses’ aides, senior Katie Tellus, said while her job entails a variety of tasks, a normal day is rather laid-back.
Tellus said, “I haven’t had to make ice packs … or do any laundry. Basically what my period does so far is deliver passes,” Tellus said. “But … working in the nurses’ office is really interesting…. I was (a nurses’ aid) last year in the freshman center. I liked that experience, and I just figured it was fun, so I did it again.”
